A widowed but rising actress, Lora Meredith, hires Annie Johnson as her black housekeeper. Johnson too has a daughter, who is light-skinned enough to pass for white. Tensions rest on the relationship each mother has with her growing child as they both reach maturity, find love, and face up to the death of a loved one.
