Shankar loses his faith in God when his mother doesn't recover from a fire that was set by a cruel and greedy zamindar. He takes Shankar's father's and uncle's land. Shankar refuses to visit the temple even when he grows up. But when he meets Gauri he starts climbing the temple steps daily to meet her.
